Often when you meet someone face to face the first thing that you notice is their smile. There are many things that we eat and drink that can cause discolouration in teeth, but don’t worry, here are some tips to help you keep your teeth white!

Brush and floss diligently!

It is important hat you brush your teeth in the morning and at night that means twice a day. Also make sure that you floss once a day. Use a soft-bristle brush and brush your teeth with a short, vertical sweeping motion.A horizontal scrubbing motion can cause gum damage.

Rinse with water after every meal

Rinsing out your mouth after every meal is a can make a significant difference for the coloration of your teeth. By doing tis after every meal you work to minimise residue, and tooth decay. This is especially important if you’ve had a cup of coffee or a glass of  red wine, these are known to discolour and wine has acids that work to erode enamel causing both staining and decaying food particles to be more of a problem.

Eat a healthy diet

Sugar, any foods that stick to your teeth, and many starchy foods increases the risk of tooth decay, which can discolour teeth. Furthermore, the higher your consumption of folic acid from fruits and veggies the lower you are at risk of bleeding gums.

Don’t forget to visit the dentist

See your dentist regularly for checkups, cleanings (and scaling),  to make sure your fillings are in good shape and your gum health. You want to make sure the dentist assesses your bite and general oral health. Polishing and scaling can help removed hardened plaque and a good deal of discolouration.

It is important to know that teeth naturally discolour as you grow older. This is because the external enamel becomes thinner which begins to reveal the dentin, underneath. It is also important to realise that teeth absorb coloured liquids especially coffee, red wine tea, and cola. Many of these foods you will have throughout your life, but you can rinse your mouth out after drinking these or brush your teeth after which can reduce the problems associated.

Sometimes gum disease makes your gums swollen and sore making them more likely to bleed. This is called gingivitis, and can usually be fixed by daily brushing and flossing.

A more severe and problematic form of gum disease is called periodontitis. This simply must be treated by a dentist. If it goes untreated, this infection can damage the bones, gums, and other tissues that support your teeth.

To prevent gum disease: Make sure that you brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.   1. Oral Cancer – Oral cancer can develop in any part of the mouth or throat. This is more likely to occur in adults over age 40 but can happen at any age. A dental checkup is necessary for your dentist to look for any signs of oral cancer. You can lower your risk of getting oral cancer by avoiding tobacco products. Also make sure to rinse out your mouth after consuming alcohol or anything that is not too healthy for your mouth.

Keeping your mouth clean is important it takes daily work on your part and means you need to get regular cleanings and checkups at the dentist. By keeping your mouth clean and healthy you in turn will be healthy and happy. It’s a pretty good trade off.
